AI SEARCH · BUSINESS VISIBILITY
Your competitors show up. Your business doesn’t. Here’s how to investigate the gap—and decide what to fix first.
Key takeaways
- One missing AI recommendation is a reason to investigate, not proof that your whole website has a problem.
- Check access to your key pages before commissioning more content.
- Your service pages should explain what you do, who you help and why a buyer should trust you.
- Look at the sources behind competing businesses. They can reveal gaps worth investigating.
- Measure mentions, linked citations and enquiries separately. They tell you different things.
You ask an AI search tool to recommend a business like yours.
It gives you a few names. You recognise two competitors. Your business is missing.
You try again with a slightly different question. Still nothing.
It is tempting to assume you need more backlinks, more blogs or a new GEO package. But you do not yet know what the problem is.
Maybe your main service page cannot be accessed. Maybe it never explains the specific service you are asking about. Or maybe the result you tested is too broad to tell you much.
Start with the evidence. Then choose the work.
This guide walks through seven checks you can make before spending money on changes.
What Does Appearing in AI Search Actually Mean?
Before you test anything, decide what you want to observe.
An AI answer might name your business. It might link to a guide on your website. Or it might recommend your service to a potential buyer.
Those are three different outcomes.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MEASURING
Brand mention
Your business is named.
Check whether the description is accurate.Linked citation
Your page is used as a source.
Check the URL and what it supports.Recommendation
Your service is suggested.
Check the buyer’s needs and context. These can overlap. None of them, by itself, proves that a lead was generated.
For example, an answer could cite your article about bookkeeping without recommending your accounting firm. That is a useful content citation, but it is not a service recommendation.
Also keep platforms separate. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT search should not be combined into one visibility result.
In a chat tool, record whether the answer actually used web search. Otherwise, you may be comparing a searched answer with a response that did not retrieve current web pages.
Seven Checks to Find Out Why Your Business Is Missing
Work through these in order. They are a troubleshooting process, not a list of confirmed AI ranking factors.
1 Are you testing questions your customers would ask?
“What is the best company?” is a weak starting point. Best for whom? In which location? For what kind of work?
A more useful test includes the needs that would make your business relevant.
Imagine you run an accounting firm that works with online retailers. Try a small set of questions like these:
- “Which accounting firms in [city] work with small online retailers?”
- “What should an online retailer ask before hiring a bookkeeping service?”
- “What services does [business name] offer?”
The first checks discovery. The second explores the information a buyer might use. The third checks how your brand is described.
For discovery tests, leave your name out. An answer that mentions a business you named in the question is not evidence that customers would discover it independently.
Record the platform, search mode, date, language, location context and cited URLs. Use a fresh conversation where possible. Your test will still be a sample, but it will be much more useful than a collection of unrelated screenshots.
2 Can the relevant search system access your pages?
Start with the page you want a potential customer to visit. For most service businesses, that means a specific service page—not just the homepage.
For Google’s AI features, supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee selection. Google’s official guidance
Ask your developer to inspect the page in Search Console and identify any access or indexing issue. Request a concrete answer: which URL is affected, what is wrong and what should change.
ChatGPT search has its own crawler controls. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler and recommends allowing it through robots.txt and relevant infrastructure rules. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for potential model-training content; those permissions can be managed independently. OpenAI’s crawler documentation
Do not remove every restriction just to see what happens. Identify the affected system and the specific rule first.
3 Does your service page answer a buyer’s questions?
Open your main service page. Read it without filling in the details you already know about your own business.
Can a new visitor tell who the service is for? What is included? What affects the price? What happens after they get in touch?
If the page only promises “quality solutions” and “excellent results,” the reader still has most of the work to do.
AN ILLUSTRATIVE SERVICE-PAGE REWRITE
Sounds positive. Says little.
“We provide reliable accounting solutions to help businesses grow.”
The reader still has to ask what you actually do.Gives the buyer something useful.
“We handle monthly bookkeeping for online retailers, including sales reconciliation, expense categorisation and management reports.”
Use this level of detail only when it reflects your real service. The second version gives a buyer enough information to ask a better follow-up question.
Now add the next detail: how the work is scoped. For example, the accounting firm could explain that its quote depends on transaction volume and sales channels.
That is useful even when the firm cannot publish a fixed price.
Your next step: List the five questions prospects ask most often. Answer the relevant ones on the service page, using your actual process and terms.
4 Have you given readers a reason to trust your claims?
“We are experts” is a claim. A named specialist with relevant experience gives a reader something to assess.
The same applies to results. A testimonial saying “great service” may reassure a buyer, but it does not explain the work you performed.
Where you have permission and evidence, show the starting problem, what you changed, the time period and the result you measured.
You do not need a dramatic success story. A clear explanation of a difficult decision can be useful: why you recommended one approach, what you ruled out and what the client needed to provide.
Google’s content guidance encourages original information and value beyond rewriting other sources. Google’s helpful content guidance Your own documented process is a practical place to start.
If you cannot substantiate an outcome, leave it out. Invented percentages and unnamed “client success stories” weaken the very trust you are trying to build.
5 Is your public business information accurate?
Suppose your website describes a specialist consultancy. Your company profile lists a service you stopped offering. A directory still links to your old domain.
A prospective customer now has three versions of your business to sort through.
Review the information you control:
- Your business name and main website.
- Core services and the customers you serve.
- Relevant location or service-area details.
- Your contact route and current team information.
Correct meaningful inconsistencies. You do not need every description to use the same sentence.
For profiles you do not control, document the inaccurate information and request a correction through the appropriate channel.
This is sensible business housekeeping. Do not treat it as a promise that a particular AI platform will start recommending you.
6 What sources appear behind your competitors?
When a competitor is mentioned, look beyond the name. Open the linked sources.
Is the answer citing the competitor’s website? A directory? An industry article? A comparison page?
Then ask what that source actually establishes. A directory listing and an independent review are different kinds of evidence.
Imagine a competitor appears for an online-retail bookkeeping question, and the linked page describes its work with marketplace sellers. Your own page says only “accounting services.” That gives you a specific content gap to investigate.
It does not prove that adding one phrase will produce the same recommendation.
Look for accurate listings, useful contributions and information your buyers genuinely need. Avoid buying a batch of mentions simply because someone claims AI systems reward volume.
7 Are you improving the right page?
A new blog can be useful. It can also become a distraction.
If customers cannot understand your core service, publishing ten more general articles will not fix that confusion on the service page.
Give each page a job. A service page should help a buyer assess the offer. A guide can explain a problem in depth. A case study can show how a specific piece of work was handled.
Connect related pages where the link genuinely helps the reader. Someone reading about an audit should be able to find the service details without hunting through the menu.
Before creating anything new, write down the question it will answer and why an existing page cannot answer it well. If you cannot explain the difference, improve the existing page first.
Your First-Week Action Plan
You do not need to investigate the whole website at once. Choose one important service, one target market and a small set of customer questions.
A WORK PLAN, NOT A RESULTS PROMISE
Establish the baseline
Save your test questions, answers and cited sources. Separate mentions from recommendations.
Check the foundations
Investigate access problems. Review the service page and conflicting business details.
Make focused improvements
Fix confirmed issues. Add missing buyer information and evidence you can verify.
Document and plan the recheck
Record what changed, what remains unresolved and when you will repeat your observations.
Seven days is an organising schedule. It is not a deadline for an AI platform to discover, process or cite your updates.
For every task, keep the page URL, the finding, the person responsible and the completion date.
If you hire an agency, ask for that same level of detail. “Improve AI authority” is not a useful deliverable until someone explains the actual work.
How Do You Know Whether the Work Is Helping?
Keep two records: what changed in the answers you sampled, and what happened in your business.
| Measure | Record this | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentions | Where your name appears and whether the description is accurate. | Every mention is a recommendation. |
| Linked citations | The cited page and the claim it supports. | A citation automatically sends traffic. |
| Referral visits | Identifiable visits and what visitors do next. | Analytics captures every AI-assisted visit. |
| Qualified enquiries | Relevant enquiries and any available source information. | Every new lead came from the recent changes. |
Google includes AI-feature traffic within Search Console’s Web performance reporting. Do not rename all of that traffic “AI traffic.” Google’s official guidance
You can also ask new prospects how they found you. Treat their answers as useful context, not perfect attribution.
When comparing your tests, keep the question set consistent. If you change the prompts every week, you also change the thing you are measuring.
And if your team changes the website, starts advertising and launches outreach in the same month, be careful about claiming that one activity caused every improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor but not my business?
A single answer cannot establish the reason. Check whether search was used, inspect the linked sources and compare the information they provide with your own pages. Repeat the test with a defined set of relevant questions before drawing a wider conclusion.
Does ranking on Google guarantee visibility in AI answers?
No. Google says eligibility does not guarantee inclusion in its AI features. Google’s official guidance Test each platform directly, and distinguish an ordinary search result from an AI mention or citation.
Do I need special AI schema or an llms.txt file?
Google says its AI features require neither special schema nor new AI text files. Google’s official guidance If someone recommends a technical addition, ask which platform needs it, what problem it solves and how the outcome will be checked.
Should I replace SEO with GEO?
No. Google says established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features. Google’s official guidance Use your AI visibility checks to identify additional questions and gaps while maintaining the fundamentals of your website.
How long does it take to appear?
There is no dependable deadline to promise. Agree on delivery dates for the audit and improvements you can control. Keep those separate from predictions about when an external platform will mention or cite your business.
Can an agency guarantee a recommendation?
Treat guaranteed placement claims with caution. Ask the agency to define exactly what it will deliver, how it will test visibility and what evidence will appear in the report. A useful proposal should remain understandable without a promise of guaranteed inclusion.
Start With One Service Page
If your business is missing from AI search, the most useful next move is to narrow the problem.
Pick the service you most want to sell. Test the questions its buyers ask. Check the page, examine the sources and fix the gaps you can demonstrate.
That gives you a clearer decision than publishing more content and hoping something changes.
